The pivot joint allows the sides of the mouthpiece to move independently while allowing the mouthpiece to keep its' shape in the mouth. This joint will experience less wear than the barrel joints.
The Mullen distributes pressure evenly over all the structures of the mouth, while this avoids pressure points, it does make the Mullen a fairly strong bit. The pressure of the Pivot Mullen is slightly softened by allowing the sides to work independently and therefore allowing the mouthpiece to act on one side of the mouth at a time.
